The word massage is derived from the Greek word “massier” which means to knead. It is an excellent form of passive exercise. Soft tissues of the body are manipulated by massage and it is usually done on bare body. This form of exercise is highly stimulating and invigorating.
The great Hippocrates the father of medicine employed this technique as far back as 400 B C for treating and healing patients. This method of treatment is popular even in the modern age and is used for treating various ailments due to its healing properties.

Massage is beneficial in various ways. It improves respiration, tones up the nervous system, and hastens the elimination of toxins, poisons and various waste materials from the body through the organs of elimination such as bowels, kidneys, lungs, and skin. It also enhances blood circulation and metabolic processes of the body. When used for improving beauty, it removes the facial wrinkles and brings about a glow on the face and skin. There are five different ways of manipulation in massage and they are:

Effleurage: This technique of massage mainly involves the use of palms of hand and fingers. It is performed in many ways namely stroking with palms of one hand, stroking with palms of two hands, the ball of the thumb, the knuckles and the finger tips. Effleurage soothes the nervous system and improves blood circulation.

Petrissage: This technique involves kneading, pressing and rolling of the tissues and is performed with one or both hands or with two thumbs or with thumbs and fingers. It strengthens muscles, increases circulation and relieves intestinal congestion and helps in the elimination of poisons. This method is basically used for the treatment of muscles.

Friction: This is done in a circular motion with the help of a thumb and tips of fingers or palm of the hand towards joints or ends of joints. Basically it is beneficial in removing swelling after nerve inflammation.

Vibrations: This method involves shaking and pressing hands and fingers rapidly and constantly on the body. This type of massage stimulates the nervous plexuses and helps in proper bowel movements.

Tapotement: This technique involves the use of wrist and short and quick blows are given with the help of wrist. It is basically useful in strengthening muscles and soothing nerves.

Massage is generally performed by an expert and cotton seed oil is used for this purpose. Talcum powder can be used if the patient is opposed to the use of oil especially if the patient has excessive body hair. The duration of massage may vary from 35 to 40 minutes and local body massage may vary from 12 to 15 minutes. After massage the oil should be completely washed off.

Massage is beneficial in various diseases and ailments. The various forms of massage are given below:

Massage of the Nerves: Various problems of the nerves are arrested by the use of this massage. But where there is acute nerve inflammation, care should be taken while massaging. The expert should massage the nerves lightly and gently and deep pressure should not be applied if nerves are swollen.

Chest massage: This massage is beneficial in many ways. It increases circulation, tones up the chest muscles, strengthens them and provides a good exercise to heart and lungs. In women the bust and mammary glands can be developed by the application of this massage.

Back massage: This massage is helpful in case of various ailments such as backache, afflictions of muscles and it provides a good means for stimulating the back muscles.

Throat massage: Problems such as sore throat, catarrh of the throat and headache are arrested by the application of this massage and it proves to be useful for tonsils and other advanced problems.

Abdominal massage: This form of massage is very useful in constipation. It stimulates the functioning of small intestines, tones and builds up the abdominal muscles and systematically eliminates the contents of both the large and small intestines. Abdominal massage should be avoided in case of stomach disorders such as kidney stones, problems of gall bladder, ovaries and fallopian tubes, ulcers in the stomach and intestines and even pregnancy. Also after taking heavy meals this type of massage should not be practiced and a time lag of at least 2-3 hours should be maintained before performing it.

Massage of the Joints: Various issues of joints such as stiff and swollen joints, joint pain can be treated by the use of this massage. But in serious cases it should be avoided. Normal bruises and sprains can be cured by applying a proper technique of massage.

Massage provides a good source of nourishment to the various body muscles and tissues and strengthens them. After having a good massage therapy the body becomes flexible to cope up with its day to day routine activities. Even Ayurveda has advocated the use of massage in its ancient scriptures. It can be effectively applied on various parts of the body provided it is performed under expert guidance.

Thus we can conclude that massage therapy is a very useful way of treating various diseases and ailments, without the intake of medicines which lead to numerous side effects.

First aid: A simple human care to the age of certification

If we believe upon archeological facts then we should say that the concept of first aid was introduced in 11th century. Initially, the idea was to offer services to knights, injured soldiers and pilgrims. Later on, in the year 1870, British Red Cross formed and it prominently marked its presence during the World War I & II. Now-a-days, there are several institutions in all over the world which promises immaculate First Aid Training Courses. Course contents of first aid certification includes techniques for dealing with bleeding and other severe injuries like broken bones, bug bites, burns, and so on.

Normally, a small cut does not create critical problems. But, it varies according to the wound location and size of the wound. For minor cases, you should rinse the injury with clean water. You can use mild antibiotic soap as well. You can use either sterile gauze or sterile adhesive bandage or adhesive tape to cover the wound. Everyday, examine your wound and change bandage. If you get doctor’s assistance then it would be too good. For sever cases, to stop excessive bleeding, press your palm tightly up to five minutes. Blood may soak the gauze then apply another but do not remove till the time bleeding stops or you reach doctor’s clinic.

Bone fracture is one of the most delicate issues for first aider.
